Jet is a semi precious ornamental gemstone. An organic fossil composed of ancient plant remains, it is found worldwide, notably in Russia, the USA, Europe and Asia. Large deposits of high quality jet, at Whitby, England supplied a thriving fashion industry in mourning jewellery, rosaries, cameos and sculptures throughout the 1800's. Quality jet is scarce, therefore a highly collectable gemstone.
